Game Journalism Day 5 - Guide

1. Predict and Play:

In 40 minutes, I think you could get a good amount done. You could build a foundation, find a bunch of crates, create a campfire, hunt for food, and maybe build a base command center.

In 40 minutes, I did manage to get a campfire and some resources from crates. I harvested trees and gathered resources but I ended up dying by a wolf.

2. Guide

-Start harvesting wood & finding resources from crates
-Build a campfire to keep warmth at night & cook
-Find a good place to live then build a foundation
-Build a base command unit (used to find home)
-Survive & keep on upgrading your house

If you're hungry/thirsty:

Kill chickens for meat, DONT kill wolves or bears because they do not give you anything. You can also find food and water from wooden crates.

Game Journalism Day 3 - Build

Describe and show how to build:

Shotgun:  A shotgun is built using 7 scrap metal, 5 wooden planks, and 4 cloths. You can find scrap metal by picking it up or crafting it. You make wooden planks by harvesting pine logs from trees and crafting them into planks. It takes 2 logs to make 1 plank. You get cloth by killing animals, finding them in crate, or scraping clothing.

Campfire:   A campfire is built by using 2 sticks and 3 logs. You can make sticks by using logs. It takes 1 log to make 1 stick. You get logs from trees. It takes 3 hits from a tree to harvest 1 log. Campfires can be used to keep warm and cook meats.

Health Kit: A health kit is crafted by using 4 medicine leaves and 1 biofuel. You can find medicine leaves by finding medicine plants which are found in the ground around the world. To create biofuel, it takes 4 medicine leaves to create 1 biofuel. You could also find biofuel and medicine leaves inside medicine bags. Health kits are used to regenerate health.

Storage Crate:  Storage crates are crafted by using 5 wooden planks, 10 nails, and 3 rope. All three can be found inside wooden crates. Rope could also be crafted by using 2 fiber plants which can be found in blueberry plants. Storage crates are used to store your items in so you don't have to always carry them in your inventory.

What can you interact with + what are their benefits?

Trees: There are 3 different types of trees in subsistence and each vary in how much wood it gives you. Every tree takes 3 hits to harvest 1 log. A small tree gives 3 logs, a medium tree gives you 4 logs, and a large trees gives you 5-6 logs you can tell the difference in the trees based on their sizes.

Wolves: Wolves are very hostile and will try to kill you. They are fast and vary in levels. The higher the level, the stronger the wolf is. Wolves will stare at you until you come close and then begin to chase you. You can tell when it's chasing you when it barks behind you but they are very hard to outrun. They are very easy to kill, it took me about 4-5 shots to kill the wolf. If you kill a wolf, you do not get anything.

Bears: Bears are very big and aggravated really easy. If you come close to one, it will stand on its back 2 legs and growl at you until you come to close. Bears are very easy to outrun but take a while to kill. I took me 2 full bullet clips to kill but I did manage to outrun it, reload, and come back to kill it. I did not get anything from the bear and you cannot interact with it.

 

Chickens: chickens are very fast so you cannot use an axe to kill it because it will always be faster. You have to shoot it too kill it and it takes 2 bullets to kill it but you have to be precise to shoot it because it is very small and fast. You can pick up the chicken and put it in your inventory and it will have 5% health.

Resource Bags/Box: There are 4 types of resource bags. The green bag is a medicine bag, this is filled with medicine, bandages, etc. . The camo bag is a firearms bag. This bag is filled with bullets, shells, and maybe a gun. The wooden box is a supply crate full of resources used to build and survive. You can open all of these crates by holding "F" for a few seconds and then it can be accessed. The only box you can not open by holding "F' is the large box at the end, that is opened by using a certain key.

Scrap Metal: Scrap metal is a resource used to craft items. You can find scrap metal on the ground and pick up up by clicking "F"

What is the definition of the title of the game?

-Subsistence: The action or fact of maintaining or supporting oneself at a minimum level.

A brief description of the game.

Subsistence is a survival game where you try to gain food, water, and shelter and basically just try to stay alive. I couldn't get any screenshots for myself because Subsistence couldn't run on my PC but I found this screenshot of in-game gameplay. 

What type of game is it and what does it compare to?
Compare to other games you have played or find out what games it compares to.

This game reminds me a lot about DayZ, a game about survival and is very similar because it is also first person. DayZ is also in it's early versions and is still improving but is one of the most popular PC games. Both games have a very similar feel except DayZ includes zombies and other players so it is much more challenging to survive.

What does it mean to be 'early access'?

Early access means to have early access to the game. The early access could be an Alpha(first) or Beta(second) version which is a very early version of the game and is still developing so the game could have a lot of bugs. They release these versions for others to play it and give reviews so the developers can improve the game.

I didn't get any screenshots or tips and tricks for day 1 because Subsistence couldn't run on my PC.
